Getting started and onboarding
What Onzli does
An overview of what the application does, and what it does not do.
Last reviewed 25 October 2026Onzli helps you prepare, review and submit UK VAT returns under Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT. It works from accounting data you already keep, and explains each step as you go.
VAT is currently in early access while HMRC production access is pending. Public filing is not available until that access exists.
What it does
- Guides you through setup: your country, the modules you need, your business details, and the connections each module needs.
- Reads your figures from ERPNext through a read-only connection, or from a CSV file you import.
- Checks how your VAT accounts and tax templates are set up, and asks you to confirm what it cannot know.
- Calculates the nine VAT boxes for a period and shows any validation or reconciliation issues.
- Lets the right person approve a return, then submits it to HMRC after a declaration and keeps the receipt.
- Gives each person in your business a role, and asks for an authenticator code before sensitive actions.
What it does not do
- It never changes your accounting records. The ERPNext connection is read-only.
- It never files anything on its own. A return is only submitted after it has been approved and someone makes the declaration.
- It holds figures back rather than guessing. If something is unclear, such as a tax template you have not classified, the figures that depend on it are withheld until you decide.
Preview is not filing. Previewing or calculating a return shows you figures. Only the final Submit to HMRC step sends anything to HMRC. See Preview, approve and submit.
