Connecting accounting software
Connect Xero
Connect your Xero organisation, read-only, so Onzli can read your invoices and bills.
Last reviewed 28 October 2026Onzli connects to Xero through your own Xero sign-in. The connection is read-only: Onzli never creates, changes or deletes anything in Xero.
Connecting Xero does not give Onzli permission to send anything to HMRC. That is a separate step: see Connect HMRC.
Connect
- Go to Settings, Connections, Accounting software, and choose Connect next to Xero.
- Choose Connect with Xero. Xero opens and asks you to sign in and allow read-only access.
- Back in Onzli, if your Xero sign-in has more than one organisation, choose which one is this business and select Use this organisation.
Once connected, Xero shows as Connected with your organisation's name. Use Check connection at any time.
Confirm your tax codes
Onzli never decides a VAT treatment from a Xero tax code on its own. For each tax code it may suggest one (standard, reduced, zero-rated or exempt), and you confirm it with a reason. Codes that are ambiguous get no suggestion: you choose.
Import a period
On the Records page, import a period's invoices, bills and bank transactions from Xero. Review what was found, decide anything marked for your attention (for example a likely duplicate, or a record changed since you last imported it), then confirm. Nothing is saved until you confirm.
If Xero asks you to sign in again
Xero access expires if it is not used for a while. If you see Sign in again, choose Sign in to Xero again. Your imported records are kept.
Disconnect
Choose Disconnect Xero. Onzli deletes its saved Xero access. Records you already imported stay, and you can still download them.
