Connect HMRC

Connect your Government Gateway sign-in so returns can be submitted.

Last reviewed 25 October 2026

To read your VAT obligations and submit returns, Onzli needs permission from HMRC through your Government Gateway sign-in.

Connect

Under Settings, Connections, HMRC, choose Connect to HMRC. You are sent to HMRC to sign in and grant access, then returned to Onzli. If you have already connected, the button reads Reconnect to HMRC. Connecting confirms your VAT registration number and retrieves your scheduled return periods, which then appear on your dashboard as obligations for the last 12 months.

Only an administrator can connect or disconnect HMRC.

What you will see

  • Environment. Either Sandbox (HMRC's test service) or Production. The environment is shown on every page and on the submit step.
  • Government Gateway connection. Connected or not, and when the connection expires. When it expires, reconnect.
  • Production submission safety. Production filing is a controlled setting. If the safety gate is active, returns cannot be submitted to production.

Disconnect

Choose Disconnect next to the connection. You can reconnect at any time.

Sandbox testing

In the sandbox environment only, an extra Sandbox tools tab lets you create an HMRC test user. The test credentials are shown once, and the new identity is not connected automatically: you connect it with the button above. These tools never appear in production.

Submit a return to HMRC

The declaration, the confirmation and what you are charged.

An uncertain submission

What to do if you do not know whether HMRC received a return.
