Troubleshooting common problems
An uncertain submission
What to do if you do not know whether HMRC received a return.
Last reviewed 25 October 2026Sometimes Onzli sends a return but cannot confirm HMRC's answer, for example if the connection drops. The return shows submission outcome uncertain, and the attempt shows outcome unknown (or in flight for longer than a few minutes).
Do not submit the same period again. First find out what HMRC holds.
Step 1: Check the outcome with HMRC
On the return's Submissions tab, choose Check outcome with HMRC. This asks HMRC what it holds for the period. It never sends a new submission. If HMRC confirms it has the return, the return is recorded as filed and the receipt is shown.
Step 2: If that does not settle it
Check HMRC yourself, for example in your VAT online account, then choose Record what HMRC holds and tell Onzli what you found:
- HMRC does NOT hold this return. The return can be submitted again.
- HMRC DOES hold this return. It is recorded as filed.
You must give a reason of at least 10 characters, can add an evidence reference, and must enter an authenticator code. The decision is kept in the audit trail.
If you record "not held" and that turns out to be wrong, HMRC's duplicate detection catches a second submission and the return is recorded as filed.
