Preparing, approving and submitting returns
Billing and receipts
Pay as you file, the annual plan, and your VAT receipts.
Last reviewed 25 October 2026Billing applies where the service charges for filing. The Billing page (administrators) shows the prices, which come from the service, so they are not repeated here.
Preparing and approving returns is free.
Pay as you file
You are charged for each return HMRC accepts. Before a return is sent, a hold for that amount is placed on your saved card. The money is taken only if HMRC accepts the return. Otherwise the hold is released. Save or replace your card on the Billing page.
Annual plan
The annual plan prices each VAT return HMRC expects from you in the next 12 months. Onzli works the number out from HMRC, so HMRC must be connected first.
- Choose Get my price.
- Your price is shown with the number of returns it covers, and how long the quote is valid.
- Choose Pay and start the plan.
While the plan is active the page shows how many prepaid returns you have used. Returns beyond the plan are charged pay as you file.
To cancel, enter your authenticator code and choose Cancel the plan and refund. The refund rule is shown on the Billing page.
VAT receipts and credit notes
Every receipt and credit note is listed on the Billing page with the seller details, net amount, VAT and total.
If a charge fails
If a filed return could not be charged, for example because the card hold lapsed and the card then declined, a notice appears on the Billing page. Replace your card.
